You’re not likely to get a more impressive view on Samui than from aptly named ‘the View’, part of the exclusive Headland Estate. Taling Ngam is famous for its sunsets, and as day turns to night it’s as though the View puts on a gold and amber evening dress, the sun’s warm glow engulfing the buildings and reflecting from their floor-to-ceiling windows. This is a villa with more than enough ‘wow’ factor to host a celebrity, yet isn’t ostentatious; rather it offers contemporary elegant style with facilities, service and setting to match.
Clinging to the side of the cliff like an eagle’s nest, the five-bedroom villa (plus kids room) has tastefully incorporated its natural surroundings: a waterfall literally flows through the walkways; rooms have been built around rocks, and the use of glass gives a wonderful sense of space and freedom.
Little ones have been thoughtfully catered for; their bright and breezy six-bunk dormitory is accessed via a forested walkway that creates a tree-house effect, perfect for fuelling the imagination. And young guests will not be short of entertainment with a selection of indoor and outdoor games that includes Wii and table tennis, plus lawns and a private beach where they can run amok. With the children so well occupied, adults can cool off in the lap pool or de-stress in the jacuzzi alongside the impressive bar, or take full advantages of the View’s superb entertainment facilities which include digital music and movie libraries with indoor and outdoor projection screens for movie nights.
The View’s in-house chef will cater to your every whim – including the concoction of a mean cocktail or two – while villa manager, Khun Opal, loves nothing more than to make the holiday special by setting up a private dinner on the beach, a barbecue in the garden, or packing a picnic to take out on the kayak. For large groups, the 22-seater dining table overlooking the bay and the ‘Five Islands’ is ideal, while smaller, informal parties will enjoy eating at the table downstairs by the pool bar where you can hop into the water between courses. And if you’re thinking of saying ‘I do’ on Samui, this photogenic villa is the perfect intimate and sophisticated wedding location. The staff are experts at tailor-making events and go out of their way to ensure it’s an occasion to be remembered.
The View is set on a secluded cliffside overlooking a stunning bay and the ‘Five Islands’. The islands are known locally as Koh Si Koh Ha (4 islands 5 islands) as one is hidden behind the others. A pathway connects the View to Headland Villas 1 - 5 (giving plenty of scope for large group rentals if needed). Steps lead down from the villa to Taling Ngam beach – swimmable at high tide (though a little rocky in places) – shared only by occasional guests from the nearby InterContinental Resort. The guarded road that leads to the villas’ car park is also used by this up-market resort. Your villa manager can organise buggies to take you to the InterContinental’s restaurants and spa, and tennis courts can be hired at the hotel too. The beach to the left of the villa (also accessible via the steps) leads to the Am Samui Resort and the Five Islands Restaurant. One kilometre away (the road is walkable but steep) is Baan Taling Ngam village, offering a handful of low-key resorts and restaurants, plus a peaceful temple to visit.
The View is an impressive contemporary structure that sits amid a forested garden. It’s been designed to take full advantage of the views over Taling Ngam bay and The Five Islands. A rock face with a waterfall cascading into the fishpond forms the backdrop to the entire villa. Stone, teak, glass and steel are combined to create an architecturally impressive structure and contemporary, yet comfortable furnishings are enhanced by fresh orchids and artwork. The villa is decorated in natural tones, with splashes of colour in the way of bold artwork and scatter cushions on the sofas. Every detail has been thought of, from the one-touch electronic blinds, to the spot reading lamps and music that can be individually controlled or piped throughout the villa.
The main villa building is on three levels. On the ground floor, you’ll find a 16.5m pool with jacuzzi, surrounded by pool deck with sun-loungers. Tucked into the rocks is a bar and open-sided lounge and dining area with a ‘beach bar’ feel. This pool area is flanked on one side by a large lawn, and on the other by a secluded massage sala and the gym, equipped with the latest fitness equipment (Ask Khun Opal to arrange private yoga or muay Thai lessons).
Glass stairs lead to the first floor and the more formal lounge, where a dove-grey sofa provides seating and the home cinema comes with a drop-down projector screen. Adjacent is a glossy-white professional kitchen complete with wine fridge and state-of-the-art coffee machine. The kitchen is open-plan to the party-sized 22-seater dining table.
The glass staircase continues to the second floor, which houses two luxurious master bedrooms. Across the lawn are two more master bedrooms each in their own pavilion. These four bedrooms are all equipped with king-size beds, bold artwork and garden bathrooms with rain showers. In addition, one of the rooms has a spa bath and what the staff refers to as the ‘sexy shower’ – set in the corner of the bedroom with views across the bay. A forested wooden path leads to the bright and airy children’s dorm room (three bunk beds sleep six children and there are two further roll-out beds) and a twin bedroom that shares a bathroom with the dorm room.
