The owners of Baan Sarika seem to have taken a leaf out of the royal Thai style guide. Carefully decorated with traditional Thai ornaments and paintings, this villa will make you feel part of a privileged class as soon as you walk through the door. A wooden sun deck and private infinity pool with jacuzzi add to the resplendence, and lounging soon becomes a prerequisite, whether in the shade of the beachside sala (gazebo) on the sun beds around the pool, or on an embroidered Thai cushion in the lounge sala with a good book. Stressed-out power players can still check their stocks from the office at the back of the property, complete with high-speed wireless internet, or take a break and slip into the TV room next door to watch a DVD or satellite sport. But the delicious beachfront pool is hard to ignore, even for the most committed workaholic.
The exclusive two-storey master suite is a private residence in itself (its beachside terrace is a particularly pleasant place to doze), but there's no cause for bedroom envy because the four guest rooms all offer their own special touches, such as four-poster beds, and the second master even has a jacuzzi bathtub and private steam room.
In keeping with the regal theme, the décor in the main living and dining area is rather ornate, but with a choice of relaxing outdoor spaces, plus less formal dining options around the pool deck or in one of the salas, you may decide to reserve the indoor dining room for special occasions.
Rates include a full buffet breakfast at the clubhouse restaurant, while a well-managed range of services at Shiva Samui Resort allows you to be as self-sufficient or pampered as you like. Baan Sarika is one of the top villas on the development. A maid visits to clean and tidy up when required and there's a helpful guest relations manager on site to deal with special requests. Those who don’t want to wander too far can make use of the village’s many facilities, such as fitness centre, spa, restaurant and kids’ club, as well as bicycles and kayaks for hire.
Part of the Shiva Samui Resort development on Natien Beach, Baan Sarika fronts one of the island's quietest stretches of soft sand and feels very separate from the rest of the properties on the estate. Although the sea beyond is incredibly picturesque, low tides can make swimming difficult from April through to August. There's a long-established Thai resort next door to Shiva Samui Resort, complete with its own on-site aquarium and mini-zoo, but this is a considerable distance from the villa and only noticeable because of occasional bird calls during the day. On the other side, the recently completed X2 Resort offers quality dining options.
Baan Sarika is built around a lotus pond, with several Thai-style pavilions linked by covered walkways forming one grand villa. The living and dining areas line one side of the pond, the former with an L-shaped, antique sofa and sliding glass doors that open onto a tropical garden. Although the villa is air conditioned throughout, all the doors and windows are fitted with sliding mosquito screens so you can safely leave windows open to catch the breeze if preferred. High, vaulted ceilings create space and light, while Thai artifacts and paintings add to the traditional ambience.
The dining room features a round, marble-topped table with a lazy-susan and seats eight comfortably. Sliding glass doors allow an abundance of natural light. The kitchen is fully-equipped with modern appliances, or make use of the clubhouse restaurant with a good selection of Western and Thai options.
The villa boasts five bedrooms: three kings and two queens, all with generous ensuite bathrooms (the two master bathrooms have tubs as well as walk-in showers). The centrally positioned, pool-front suite is on two levels with private lounge area downstairs featuring a comfortable sofa and chairs while, upstairs, the bedroom offers stunning views over the ocean. The second master also looks over the pool to the beach; its ensuite features a jacuzzi and steam room. The other three bedrooms all have polished teak floors, large wardrobes and spacious ensuite shower rooms.
To the right of the villa entrance is a dedicated TV room with satellite and DVD player, a small library and an office with high speed internet. The villa also has a small maid's room with ensuite shower, that can be used as an extra single room.
Outside, an attractive sala with a low wooden coffee table and Thai cushions beckons for afternoon siestas. More energetic guests can make use of the 9m, blue-tiled infinity swimming pool and jacuzzi, which sit right next to the beach. Another large sala is positioned next to the pool, with a low table and cushions, while an outdoor dining table for six next to the pool is perfect for alfresco meals.
