Shiva Samui Resort - Baan Chanchai

The Villa

If your ideal holiday involves a pristine stretch of beach for early morning runs and plenty of outdoor activities, then you’ll be well pleased with Baan Chanchai.  The focus is on outdoor living at this compact, but well-appointed two-bedroomed villa, only 100m from the beach, located in the secure Shiva Samui Resort.  It’s the ideal place for families to reconnect and get back to basics with a plethora of on-site activities to keep all ages busy.  Or, if you choose just to unwind and do nothing, you can stroll to the beach or laze on one of four cushioned sun loungers or a cozy canopy chair alongside your private pool.

Make the most of the complimentary Shiva Samui Resort facilities, including a tennis court, volleyball, games room with pool table and table tennis, swimming pool, gym and kayaks.  A full-service spa, mountain bike hire, private yoga classes and twice-daily kids’ club activities are also available for an extra charge.  Your cozy living room offers TV with satellite channels, as well as a DVD player and the reception office houses a movie and book library, and offers loan of Xbox and PlayStation that can be set up in your villa.

Baan Chanchai is a homely choice, ideal for small families or two couples, and with a fully equipped kitchen, it’s the perfect place to prepare a meal with produce from the local markets.  The friendly staff will do your shopping for you for a fee of 15% on top of the grocery costs, or you can book a private chef and enjoy a delicious Thai-style barbecue next to your pool.  The on-site Clubhouse Restaurant offers a good selection of Western and Thai dishes, which can be enjoyed there (there’s live music on some nights) or ordered as room service.  This too is where you’ll enjoy your inclusive buffet breakfast – or if you prefer, a continental breakfast can be delivered to the villa.  Baan Chanchai is serviced daily, and the guest relations manager is on hand at the office for anything you may need.

Location

Part of the Shiva Samui Resort development on Natien Beach, Baan Chanchai sits about 100m back from the beach.  The villa is partially screened with strategically planted foliage from passers-by heading to the beach, which is one of the island's quietest stretches of soft sand.  Although the sea beyond is incredibly picturesque, low tides can make swimming difficult from April through to August, but it also makes it the perfect place to learn water sports such as kite surfing.  There's a long-established Thai resort next door to Shiva Samui Resort, complete with its own on-site aquarium and mini-zoo, but this is a considerable distance from the villa and only noticeable because of occasional bird calls during the day. On the other side, the X2 Resort (pronounced ‘cross two’) offers quality dining options, while the Kamalaya (3km), a holistic health retreat offering healing therapies from East and West is well worth a visit.

There are a couple of local shops within walking distance, but as everything is catered for on-site and the staff are happy to shop for you there's little need to venture out.  The nearest settlement of significance is Lamai (7km), which is Samui's second largest tourist beach and offers all the benefits of an international tourist town with a choice of supermarkets, shops, restaurants and nightlife.  Lamai beach is also good for swimming, although it can get busy during the high season months from December to April.  In the opposite direction, the main ring road north takes you to some of Samui's most accessible and popular waterfalls.  Mountain walks, elephant rides and adventure sports are all on offer in the area, including ATV safaris and canopy rides.  Shiva Samui Resort offers a complimentary shuttle bus service to Lamai and Chaweng four times a day.

Rooms

Entering Baan Chanchai through its garden, you are greeted by a beautiful turquoise swimming pool, set into a white terrazzo terrace and flanked by inviting sun loungers below shade-giving umbrellas.  A four-seater dining table is the perfect place to enjoy a brunch by the pool, and a cozy canopy chair makes the ideal spot for some poolside reading.

Baan Chanchai offers a simple, one-level layout comprising a central living area and two bedrooms, so ideal for those wanting intimate accommodation and not too many stairs.  Heading inside from the terrace, you enter an open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen area, cooled by both fans and air-conditioning. The interior is bright and breezy, with a light tiled floor, white walls, wispy white curtains, bold Thai art and artifacts, and a taupe flop-in sofa set, facing the satellite TV with DVD player.  The indoor dining table seats six and the well-equipped bright white kitchen with stainless steel appliances makes home-from-home living easy.  To the front, the living room opens up to the swimming pool and garden, offering the opportunity for indoor/outdoor living.

The two bedrooms are simply yet tastefully furnished and come with crisp white bedding and accents of color in the bold artwork, scatter cushions and throws.  The queen-bedded master bedroom offers ample cupboard space as well as a spacious en-suite bathroom, complete with bathtub and rain shower. A second bedroom with twin beds leads off to the other side of the living room, and also has an en-suite bathroom with a rain shower.  Little extras such as umbrellas by the front door, hair dryers, a safe and water cooler, make this a comfortable and self-contained holiday villa.  Although compact, Baan Chanchai is spacious and allows you to kick off your shoes and relax by the pool or stroll to the beach, with a strong emphasis on outdoor living.
